6 th SCIENCE TEACHERS’ CONGRESS
MAIN THEME: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
ABOUT THE MAIN THEME : A BRIEF
My preferences are all for Science and
methods of science, for science has
opened up new vistas which wait to be
explained. Science and scientific methods
are the basis of life today. There lies in
science the search for truth on the one
hand and the betterment of humanity on
the other.
Jawahar Lal Nehru
With the advent of time, Science and
Technology is advancing at exponential
speeds now and is going to make it
possible within a decade to solve some of
the grand challenges of humanity. It will
need a global effort and that is why Indian
scientists, entrepreneurs and the
government have to play a vital role.
The World Commission on Environment
and Development Report-
“Our Common Future (1987)” defined
Sustainable Development as the
Development which meets and satisfies
the present needs without compromising
the future demands. Sustainable
Development does not mean shifting to
pre-Industrial Science and Technological
era but promising alternate methods and
strategies in science and technologies to
the present scenario.
Technology is often looked upon as an
elixir, as a panacea, as a cure for all. but it
is not so. It is to be treated as an enabler
and a multiplier and not as the main
product Human behaviour and the way
humans understand and use technology is
what matters. Sustainability can not be
merely about ivory tower concepts and
armchair ideas. Science and Technology
has evolved from being an island to a
‘Contiguous landmass’ linked to society,
industry and government working in close
collaboration with these three to solve
practical problems, which the country is
facing today.
The Science and Technology and the
innovation policy of 2020 states that if
India to “march ahead on a sustainable
pathway - - -- - - - towards achieving an
ATMNIRBHAR BHARAT, a greater
emphasis may be needed on developing
indigenous technologies and encouraging
grass-root innovations”.
A few vital thrust areas with regard to
science and technology developments
may be pondered upon as below:* Environmental Sustainability as a must
pursue option for the masses. * Energy
efficiency measures and how to
augment the respective National energy
productions. * Efficient water manage
ment and water resources. * Sustainable
waste management involving reduction
of waste, re-use of consumable,
recycling and recovery of waste that is
produced. * Updating knowledge on
recent Artificial Intelligence models and
tools available as AI technology needs
awareness about the specific applications
of institutional interest. Using algorithms
to decide the chances of a defendant
becoming a repeat offender. * Robotics,
nanotechnology, data science, cyber
security, space exploration and use of
IT in agriculture are also among the
sustainable goals.
Development of Science and Technology
is dedicated to science and technology
dissemination with a strong commitment in
spreading scientific awareness, especially
with Indian perspectives, ethos and
cultural milieu. Hence the success of
sustainable development goal lies in the
diffusion and use of science and technolo
gy innovations and skills. It will help to
elevate science and technology into
celebration and bring it close to everyday
life towards sustainable development.
